Swine Stock

Friday, July 24th, 2009

This last weekend I took some time off to go to Swine Stock. A giant pig roast upstate complete with a bonfire, fireworks, and a cover band that played every single song that was ever on the radio in the 90s.

I mostly left my cameras in my bag for the event, but my friend and co-conspirator Tanveer snapped some amazing pictures which are up on his blog here.

Yup, that’s me at the lead of the post, oohing and aaahing at the fireworks.

Bubby’s Pie Co, Brooklyn

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

*This is part of a series of posts I’m doing about some of my favorite wedding venues around NYC.*

I’ve shot quite a few weddings at Bubby’s Pie Co in Dumbo, and it’s a great location. It’s a space with a nice open feel. It’s right in the middle of Dumbo, just across the street from the waterfront park. I’ve always had great experiences with the staff, who seem attentive and focussed on making everything run smoothly on the wedding day.

I dropped by recently and JoJo let me take a few snaps to give an overall idea of the space. There’s a balcony that wraps around on the second level, a nice large open space in the center, and another lower level that wraps around by the windows. The area in the middle of the ground floor is a natural space for a dance floor, and it’s nice to have the upper level for guests who want to hang out or watch the dance floor action from afar.

The space also has a nice sense of design. I like the green accents, the wooden tables and the bar. The design elements are well done, but not overwhelming, and I think the space lends well to adding your own decorative elements.

There’s a row of seating along the ground floor windows as well.

Some nice, yet not overstated design elements.

This shot gives a feel for the location of Bubby’s. Right on the water in Dumbo between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges. Here  it is on Google maps.

One really great option that I’ve seen couples go for is to have the ceremony outside in the park. It’s just a stones throw away from Bubby’s. Here’s an overall picture of Jesse and Jennifer’s ceremony last year.

There’s a set of steps that lead down the the water, and this makes a natural space to hold a ceremony.

You have to get a permit to have a ceremony in the park. On a summer weekend, there are often a ton of wedding parties that show up to take pictures around the park and with the views of downtown Manhattan.

Of course, you can always do the ceremony inside at Bubby’s too. Here’s how Laura and Steve used the space.

The space works great for dancing.

I hope this can be helpful if you’re looking for a venue for your wedding. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch, or better yet, leave your question in the comments below!

Kristin and Marcus

Here are my favorites from Kristin and Marcus, who got married recently at Queens County Farm. I met up with everyone while they were getting ready at the nearby Andrew Hotel.Marcus gets ready for the wedding at the Andrew Hotel. They had some really cool details. I loved the little cake toppers (well, they weren’t actually on the cake…) that were made to look like them.

Kristin’s maid of honor went way beyond the call of duty, and wrote them a song, complete with signs for the wedding party.
