Alicia and Mike at Bubby’s Brooklyn

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Mike and Alicia had a great August wedding at Bubby’s in Dumbo recently. It was awesome to be back in Bubby’s, and the first time I’ve seen a ceremony indoors there. It was a good call on Alicia and Mike’s part, since it was definitely a hot one outside.

I met up with Alicia where she was getting ready with her mom in Tribeca.

I can’t believe I never knew this, but Bubby’s has a photo booth! Mike and Alicia left a guest book at the front, and encouraged all their guests to take a picture of themselves in the and leave it with their wishes in the book.

Good use made of the photobooth at Bubby's Brooklyn.

Alicia did the invitations herself. Not only the design, but she actually printed them by hand. They were awesome. Also, she used vintage postage stamps to send them out, which I thought was a great idea.

Another great touch was the place cards. Tables were organized based on symbols for the NYC trains.Bubbys_brooklyn_wedding-3a.jpg

Bettina runs through things with everyone pre-ceremony. I know I’ve said it before, but I absolutely love the way she officiates and makes the ceremony personal for the couple. She rocked at Alicia and Mike’s wedding.

I loved this touch: every guest got a black and white cookie and a couple snaps of Alicia and Mike from the photo booth.Bubbys_brooklyn_wedding-16.jpgBubbys_brooklyn_wedding-18.jpg  Bubbys_brooklyn_wedding-19.jpg Bubbys_brooklyn_wedding-20.jpgBubbys-Brooklyn-wedding-4.jpg

That’s Gary, AKA DJ Gaza keeping everyone moving at the reception. I love it when I see him at a wedding, because it invariably means that there’s going to be plenty of dancing.

Bubby’s Pie Co, Brooklyn

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

*This is part of a series of posts I’m doing about some of my favorite wedding venues around NYC.*

I’ve shot quite a few weddings at Bubby’s Pie Co in Dumbo, and it’s a great location. It’s a space with a nice open feel. It’s right in the middle of Dumbo, just across the street from the waterfront park. I’ve always had great experiences with the staff, who seem attentive and focussed on making everything run smoothly on the wedding day.

I dropped by recently and JoJo let me take a few snaps to give an overall idea of the space. There’s a balcony that wraps around on the second level, a nice large open space in the center, and another lower level that wraps around by the windows. The area in the middle of the ground floor is a natural space for a dance floor, and it’s nice to have the upper level for guests who want to hang out or watch the dance floor action from afar.

The space also has a nice sense of design. I like the green accents, the wooden tables and the bar. The design elements are well done, but not overwhelming, and I think the space lends well to adding your own decorative elements.

There’s a row of seating along the ground floor windows as well.

Some nice, yet not overstated design elements.

This shot gives a feel for the location of Bubby’s. Right on the water in Dumbo between the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges. Here  it is on Google maps.

One really great option that I’ve seen couples go for is to have the ceremony outside in the park. It’s just a stones throw away from Bubby’s. Here’s an overall picture of Jesse and Jennifer’s ceremony last year.

There’s a set of steps that lead down the the water, and this makes a natural space to hold a ceremony.

You have to get a permit to have a ceremony in the park. On a summer weekend, there are often a ton of wedding parties that show up to take pictures around the park and with the views of downtown Manhattan.

Of course, you can always do the ceremony inside at Bubby’s too. Here’s how Laura and Steve used the space.

The space works great for dancing.

I hope this can be helpful if you’re looking for a venue for your wedding. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch, or better yet, leave your question in the comments below!
