Betsy and Joe at the Foundry

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

I have been excited to shoot these guys wedding ever since they came to me last year with the idea of shooting some fight-night style portraits for their invites (logistic-wise, it didn’t end up happening, but I think it was such a great indication of their personalities and creativity). I met up with Betsy at the hotel after she finished running a 5k race that morning (!) with her veil on. Okay, so it wasn’t the same veil she wore to the wedding. But super impressive.

I know, I go on and on about the Foundry, but it really is such a rad spot. They had some sweet weather for the cocktail hour in the courtyard.

These guys have a brilliant sense of humor. Custom made foam fingers that they busted out while everyone was dancing. So rad.

I met up with Laura at the hotel where Kiela was doing her hair and makeup.

No cake for these guys. Intead they opted for a pecan pie. That’s the awesome Michelle Gordon, their coordinator giving a hand. It was my first time working with her, and she did a great job of making everything run smoothly all day.

The Foundry

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

The Foundry is a venue in Queens, Long Island City.

I end up shooting their quite a bit, and I love it. The venue is definitely a bit off the beaten path, and I feel like the couples who go for this space are looking for a space with some extra character.

For the last couple years, they had a really great event manager/coordinator, Taryn, who recently moved out of NYC. I’ve been coordinating their new manager, Julie and she seems to be really on the ball as well.

If you know the space and there’s anything else you want to share about it, please leave a comment below. If you have any questions that I can help answer, leave a comment and I’ll definitely answer it.

The main space at the Foundry is basically split into two levels. The picture above shows the ground floor entrance, where the guests usually arrive.

Foundry Looking Back

Above is the view of the space looking towards the courtyard. There is a double door in the middle of the windows, so you can walk straight out into the courtyard.

Here’s a look at the top level.

There’s a little dressing room in a room on the side, and a few brides have taken advantage of it as a spot for getting ready.

To give a feel for the neighborhood, here’s a snap of the street where the Foundry is.
View of the balcony from the Foundry, overlooking Queens and into Manhattan.

There’s a terrace that’s accessible from a door on the second level. I’ve never shot a wedding where the couple rented this space out, but I imagine it would be a sweet spot to have another bar if you had a lot of guests.

A view of a ceremony at the Foundry

Most of the couples who I’ve shot at The Foundry have held the ceremony in the main space. Here’s an idea of how Steve and Jessica did it a couple years ago.

Formal pictures from Molly and Marks wedding

There are some walls around the outside with some great character, and I’ve used them as a background for some family pictures in the past.

Overall view of the space with decorating idea.

I loved this idea that Steve and Jessica had for stringing lights across the space.
wedding decoration ideas for the Foundry

A couple other decorations that could serve as inspiration for the space: Mark and Molly put these handmade birds up on the guard rails (and all over the place!), and there’s a ledge that runs around the second floor that is a great spot for candles.
After their wedding, some couples like to bus their guests home from the Foundry.

The Foundry’s location in Long Island City is definitely a bit out of the way. Mark and Molly chartered a bus to get friends and family in and out of the city, which I thought was a great idea.

I love shooting here. There’s a lot of fun stuff I can do in terms of lighting from the second floor.
